Virginia Clarke

Self taught abstract artist from Cape Town, South Africa.
Paints under the name VIRGLO.

Hello. My name is Virginia Clarke and I have been painting since 2007. Painting abstracts to me is like composing a symphony of music. Interestingly enough, I see a synergy between being a Djembe player and art. If the ingredients of variety, rhythm and balance are present the artwork then takes on a unique form and speaks for itself.

My inspiration is found in the dusky blues of the sea and the warm blast of a dazzling sunlight. Using simple household items as tools, I usually combine acrylic mediums and organic material from the sea to push media beyond the realm of its possibilities. Experimenting has played a key role in exploring colour, texture and form on the canvas. I love this interplay between media and colour and how it evokes emotion in an artwork. New and diverse environments excite me as I always find a snippet of nature to bring to an artwork. The challenge is always to find the unexpected in the most ordinary surroundings.

“Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”
– Forrest Gump

My artwork reminds me of this Forrest Gump quote. When I start out on a blank canvas I never fully know what I am going to end up with. I take my cue from the Master Artist and Creator Himself, whose designs, creations and colour palette are endless. Therefore, I do not box myself into one distinct style; I let my mood take me in whatever direction it wants to go. Creativity is there to be explored and enjoyed. I am energised by the freedom that comes with having no fear of judgment and rejection of one’s creation. The only constant is that the end result will be an abstraction.

My goal is to make original art affordable to as many people as possible while never compromising on the quality of materials used. Please take a walk through my website and join me as we explore this artistic journey together.
